The Netherwood Hotel is in the Edwardian town of Grange-over-Sands close to the railway station with its access to the Lake District. of which it is on the Southern edge.  It is positioned high up the cliffs overlooking the Morecambe  Bay Estuary, so rooms at the back of the hotel are not as light as those overlooking the bay. The lift only reaches the first floor bedrooms. There is a gym free to residents and a spa, discounted for guests —ask for a price list. Some of the bedrooms on offer are in a separate building within the hotel grounds. Rock House is a modern building accessed by a gravel path from the main building or by car from a separate entrance on the main road and has its own dedicated parking outside. Rock House has 4 en-suite rooms—2 with bay views and all with private outside space. The Netherwood must serve the most elegant breakfasts of any of my hotels. If you like plain and simple dinners, then the Netherwood is not the hotel for you as the chefs can be quite adventurous. Don’t sit next to the windows in the bridge room if you’re easily distracted as the view is guaranteed to draw your attention!

If you like to relax or read a book, the gardens have plenty of seats and you can always take a drink from the bar with you.

There are some interesting shops and a variety of cafes in Grange-over-Sands or you can take a stroll along the promenade with its flower beds sponsored by local businesses. Paddling is not advised as the sands can be quite dangerous.

Farther afield are the delights of Cartmel, home of the sticky toffee pudding, or you can take a trip on the train to Arnside or Windermere.
