The Red Lion is situated by the River Wharfe in the village of Burnsall in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. To make the most of its location, this is a Holiday with Bridge venue. Recently taken over by Thwaites, so a decent pint is assured, the Red Lion is undergoing refurbishment in the hope that the accommodation can match the excellence of the food. It has been dispensing hospitality for centuries. The cellars (reportedly inhabited by a mischievous ghost) date from the 12th century and the original “one up, one down” structure which is now the bar from the 16th century. Bedrooms are in the later parts of the main pub building, the manor house and cottages, so only suitable for those fit enough to cope with stairs and moving between buildings. Daytime will be free for discovering what the local area has to offer. Burnsall is the perfect base to explore the breath-taking Yorkshire Dales on foot. With plenty of routes available from the Red Lion front door, whether you prefer the views from a fell hike, a gentle meander along a river, or a tour of the local villages. Patrick and I walked along the river to Grassington on our exploratory weekend and saw a kingfisher. Guests will be welcome to join us for gentle strolls or invited to form their own group of serious walkers. If exploring by car is more your style, there is plenty to see in the area. This includes Bolton Abbey, Harewood House, Harlow Carr Gardens, Stump Cross Caverns, Linton Falls, Parceval Hall Gardens, the Embsay Steam Railway and Ilkley Toy Museum to mention but a few.

I have chosen a 5 night holiday so there will still be the opportunity for plenty of bridge. We shall be using the function suite which has its own bar and private dining area for our playing room in the evenings.
