Cairndale Hotel

Dumfries

DG1 2DF

Tel. 01387 254111

Dumfries is located in Dumfries and Galloway

The family-owned Cairndale Hotel is situated less than 5 minutes from  both the railway station and the town centre. It is ideally situated for exploring the local area and the Solway coast. The hotel itself is rather dour in aspect but the rooms are clean and comfortable. The main staircase is rather splendid. The hotel boasts a gym, decently-sized swimming pool and separately run spa within the building. Breakfast is buffet style but dinner will be table service. With a choice of rooms,  there should be one to suit your requirements. This is another hotel which prefers to speak to you directly, so, in addition to telling me, you will have to ring Elaine on her dedicated line 01387 240282 (Mon-Fri. 9:00 to 5:30) at the hotel  to book your room and pay your £25 deposit, quoting “Helen’s Bridge Holidays” to make sure you receive the correct rate.

Don’t be put off by the rundown streets leading to the market square where you will find Dumfries’ pleasant shopping centre. If shopping isn’t your favourite pastime, there are pleasant walks along the River Nith.

The town boasts more than its fair share of historic gems including the Robert Burns Centre and one of the oldest bridges in Scotland over the River Nith. Robert Burns moved to Dumfriesshire in 1788 and Dumfries itself in 1791, living there until his death on 21 July 1796.

Waterstones Bookshop is on the site of the hotel originally visited by Bonnie Prince Charlie. The timber panelling of "Prince Charlie's room" was largely reinstated and painted complete with the oil painted landscapes by Robert Norie (1720–1766) in the overmantels at either end of the room and these can still be seen as the upstairs showroom of the book shop. A plaque on the wall on the site of the King's Arms Hotel, now Boots the Chemist's, records the presence there in 1829 of William Hare of Burke and Hare notoriety.
